Benefits of Mulch
- Keeps your landscaping beds looking neat and well kept.
- Suppresses unwanted bed weeds.
- Less required watering as mulching slows down evaporation rate and allows for moisture retention.
- Protects against temperature changes. Mulch acts as an insulator, helping to regulate soil temperature to keep plant roots cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
- Mulch breaks down over time and contributes to soil health. This can be very helpful, especially if your soil fertility is poor.
- Mulch will help retain soil moisture- because of less evaporation. This is especially beneficial during Virginia's hot summer months. This will help keep your plants hydrated.
When & How Often Should You Mulch?
We recommend at least one time per season in order to keep your landscaping looking fresh.
To take full advantage of the many benefits it can offer to the soil, some people like to mulch twice a year.
Spring, (around May or early June) is a common time to apply mulch in Virginia. By early spring the soil has warmed up and there won't be any frost. Mulching in the spring will help retain moisture, prevent weed growth, and help prepare your landscape beds for the summer.
Fall is also a great time to mulch in Virginia because mulch helps protect plants from chiller temperatures, reduces temperature fluctuations, and prepares your landscape for the following growing season.
Mulch can be applied in the summer as well. This will help your garden / landscaping beds retain moister and protect them from the summer elements.
After Planting! If you're adding new plants to your landscape beds, it's a good practice to mulch immediately after planting. Mulching new plants will greatly help with moisture retention, controlling weeds, and temperature regulation for the newly established plants.
Do a mulch refresh! If you have mulched in the spring or fall, you may want to do a light mulch refresh in mid-summer. Mid-summer mulching will help maintain moisture levels during the hottest months and will help suppress weeds.
We offer both residential and commercial mulch services. Why go through the hassle of estimating, shoveling, and spreading mulch yourself? Let our team mulch your property. Mulch will improve and maintain your home's curb appeal while you avoid the physical demands it requires.
